Today I want to share my top picks for quirky hotels in London. People always ask me where to stay in London, and I have a lot to say on the subject. I’ve stayed in countless hotels in the UK capital and I have some favorites that offer an experience beyond the norm. If you want something a bit different, read on for A Lady in London’s guide to choosing a cool and unusual London hotel for your personal style.
Quirky Hotels in London
From Instagram followers to travel planning clients, I get a lot of messages about where to stay in London.
The city is enormous and the attractions are spread out, so the best place depends on your personal taste and which neighborhood and hotel best fit your style. If you’re looking for a unique stay in London, there are plenty of options.
I hope my guide will help you choose the perfect London hotel for you, and that your chosen accommodation will give you a memorable stay in the city.
Quirky Places to Stay in London
These hotels are spread out across London. While many are central, I’ve included a few in less obvious areas like Hackney, where you can live like a local in one of the coolest neighborhoods in London.
Whatever you choose, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
1. Treehouse Hotel
I’ll start my list with one of the most unique hotels in London. The Treehouse Hotel in Marylebone not only has unique stylish decor, but also stunning views of the London Eye, The Shard, Regent’s Park, and Canary Wharf.
Located near the iconic BBC Broadcasting House and a short walk from Regent Street and Bond Street, it’s in a great location in the heart of London.
Add to that a hip rooftop oasis and cozy, colorful guest rooms and it’s an all-around great place to stay. You can book a room at the Treehouse Hotel here.
2. Sunborn London Yacht Hotel
Another quirky hotel in London is the Sunborn. This property is housed on a superyacht in Royal Victoria Dock. This unusual accommodation features city views, dining options including afternoon tea, and luxurious guest rooms.
The Sunborn is located less than a minute’s walk from ExCeL London, so it’s a unique place to stay if you’re in town for a trade show or conference there. You can book a room here.
3. The Standard
If land is more your thing, The Standard is a great option. This quirky hotel near London’s King’s Cross neighborhood offers over 260 rooms.
From snug spaces to terraced suites with outdoor bathtubs overlooking the beautiful St Pancras station, this hotel has a lot going for it.
The Standard has colorful decor and hip style throughout its cocktail bar, restaurant, late-night lounge, and other public areas, too. You can see more and book a room here.
4. The Portobello Hotel
If you want to stay in a quirky hotel in London that’s in a local neighborhood, The Portobello Hotel is just the place.
This luxurious boutique bolthole features interiors that channel the bohemian spirit of Notting Hill and the famous Portobello Road Market.
This unique hotel is also popular with celebrities. Rumor has it Johnny Depp and Kate Moss once bathed in champagne in Room 16. If you want to follow in their (bare)foot steps, you can book a room here.
5. The Exhibitionist Hotel
Over in South Kensington, The Exhibitionist Hotel is another of my favorite quirky hotels in London. This hip place features rotating art exhibitions in an intimate, laid-back atmosphere.
The hotel channels style, chic, and cool from its funky lobby portraits to its individually-designed corridors. There’s something to catch the eye everywhere you look.
The Exhibitionist is conveniently located within walking distance of the South Kensington tube station and cultural heavyweights like the V&A, Natural History Museum, and Science Museum. You can book a room here.
6. The Hoxton
Shoreditch is London’s original capital of cool. The area has gentrified a lot since I moved to the UK, but it’s still known for hip bars, trendy restaurants, and good nightlife. Add to that great hotels like The Hoxton, and Shoreditch is a fun place to stay.
I’ve enjoyed a night at The Hoxton. It’s one of the area’s most famous hotels and I like its restaurant and cafe. Add to that great value for money and serious style, and this hotel is one of the best places to stay in London. You can book a room here.
7. Andaz London Liverpool Street
Liverpool Street also offers a good mix of quirky hotels in London. On one side of the street are modern skyscrapers, on the other lie Old Spitalfields Market and lots of charming lanes with historic houses and colorful doors.
My favorite hotel on Liverpool Street is Andaz London Liverpool Street. I’ve stayed here, eaten at a number of the restaurants and bars, and had afternoon tea at the Andaz.
But what makes it truly quirky is the secret old Masonic temple in the building. Discovered during a renovation, it adds a nice touch of mystery to the place. You can book a room here.
8. La Gaffe
I know I’m always going on about how much I love Hampstead, but it’s hard not to when it’s such a perfect village in the city.
This area is one of the best places to stay in London if you want to have a local experience and a peaceful retreat from the chaos of the city center.
When I lived in Hampstead I always had my out-of-town visitors stay at La Gaffe. Not only is it the only hotel in Hampstead, but it’s also run by a friendly family that takes good care of its guests.
La Gaffe is a restaurant with rooms, and its historic atmosphere makes for unique accommodation. Add to that great value for money, and it’s one of the best unique places to stay in London. You can book a room here.
9. The Fox and Anchor
Clerkenwell and Smithfield have excellent restaurants and pubs. These neighboring areas are centrally located, too, so they make an ideal base for exploring everywhere from the City to Bloomsbury.
I’ve had a really memorable stay at a pub with rooms called the Fox and Anchor. With a warren of historic wood-paneled spaces, the pub is one of the most unique in the city.
The guest rooms above it are cozy and stylishly decorated, too. It’s one of my top picks for unusual places to stay in London. You can book a room here.
10. Zedwell Piccadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus is right in the thick of things. Close to some of London’s most famous attractions, the area is also known for being near the shops on Regent Street and movie theaters in Leicester Square.
There’s no shortage of places to stay around here, but one of the quirkiest hotels is the Zedwell Piccadilly Circus. This place offers a haven of peace in the heart of the West End.
It’s a lifestyle concept hotel designed to promote sleep and wellbeing, and every element of the design is fashioned to help guests relax and unwind. You can book a room here.
11. St Martins Lane Hotel
Not far from Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, St Martins Lane Hotel in Covent Garden is another of my favorite quirky hotels in London.
Philippe Starck created the hotel’s aesthetic to be a surrealist wonderland viewed through the looking glass of classic British eccentric taste.
I’ve stayed at St Martins Lane Hotel, and I love its amazing location and sleek contemporary style. Stepping inside truly feels like crossing the threshold into a more design-led world. You can book a room here.
12. Good Hotel London
If you want something truly unusual, Good Hotel is just the ticket. This floating hotel in East London’s Royal Docks is as quirky as it gets. The place is complete with sleek, minimalist style and a roof deck cocktail bar with views.
Guest room interiors at Good Hotel are inspired by Dutch design. They feature natural, durable, and re-purposed materials for an overall relaxing feel. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you can book a room here.
13. Artist Residence
Just west of Westminster, Pimlico always flies under the radar. But it’s a great central location and has more of a neighborhood feel than a lot of the areas around it.
Best of all, Pimlico is home to the Artist Residence. This stylish hotel oozes character and design-led touches.
I’ve breakfasted here many times and toured the rooms once, and it’s a place I could move into given the chance. You can book a room here.
14. Leman Locke
Next on my list of quirky hotels in London is Leman Locke. This property in east London’s Whitechapel is known for the pink spiral staircase and bright interior of its lobby.
Upstairs you’ll find all the style of a boutique hotel with the flexibility and space of a serviced apartment. It offers a great alternative to a standard hotel experience in London.
A design-led aparthotel, it’s perfect for free spirits who want a unique stay near the Tower of London, Brick Lane, and other popular places in London. You can book a room here.
15. The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell
Next on my list of quirky London hotels is The Zetter Townhouse Clerkenwell. This beloved property is an independently-owned, 13-bedroom Georgian townhouse hotel with an award-winning cocktail lounge.
Tucked away on a side street in the heart of historic Clerkenwell, it’s a great home away from home.
The Zetter Townhouse is best known for its decor. The hotel describes it as something akin to a “private residence of an eccentric and fabulous ancestor”.
It’s all things cool, and it’s a great place to live like a local in London. You can book a room here.

If you love a place with a provocative use of color, texture, and art, this is the spot for you. Think lush, lavish, and sensual, and you’ll get the idea. You can book a room here.
18. Ruby Lucy
If you want to stay in style on the South Bank, one of the best quirky hotels in London is Ruby Lucy. This place offers “lean luxury” at affordable prices.
Located near Waterloo and designed with a little carnival magic, it’s a great alternative to chain hotels and standard accommodation.
Ruby Lucy’s design focuses on rich, dark tones and bright brass accents. Subtle stripes are offset by circus drums and juggling pins. Guest rooms have all the amenities, from rainfall showers to soft, fluffy towels. You can book a room here.
19. The Megaro Hotel
Right across the street from King’s Cross station, The Megaro Hotel brings unique style to the fore. Describing itself as a place of constant (r)evolution that’s high in colors and bold in flavors, it’s a unique place to stay in London.
I remember the first time I went to The Megaro Hotel. It wowed me with its style and rebellious edge. Guest rooms here feature a dark and seductive mix of highly tactile surfaces and many pay homage to the area’s alternative past. You can book a room here.
20. Baglioni Hotel
Next on my list of quirky places to stay in London is the Baglioni Hotel. This hotel is not only in a great location on Hyde Park in Kensington, but also features colorful Italian decor and stylish ambiance.

23. Twenty Nevern Square Hotel
If you’re looking to live like a local, Twenty Nevern Square Hotel in residential Earls Court is a great choice. This 4-star quirky hotel in London is a boutique accommodation that offers guests a taste of luxury on a budget.
Set in a Victorian brick building overlooking a garden square, Twenty Nevern Square Hotel features individually-designed guest rooms decorated in a unique mix of European and Oriental styles. You can book a room here.
24. The Rookery
Another of my favorite quirky hotels in London is The Rookery. Tucked away on a historic alley in Clerkenwell, this place features dark wood paneling, stone floors, open fires, and antique furniture reminiscent of a private members’ club.
The hotel offers charming heritage rooms with elegant period furniture and decor. It’s a great place to stay if you want to be in the heart of London and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. You can book a room here.
25. Courthouse Hotel
Another of the top quirky hotels in London is Courthouse Hotel. This 5-star luxury hotel in central London’s Soho is unusual in that it’s situated in an old Grade-II listed magistrates’ court.
