I’m here on the island for the second year in a row, and I’m staying with locals like I did the last time I traveled to St Croix. They’ve taken me all over the place and given me their insider tips on where to stay.
While there’s no right or wrong place, there’s an ideal location and accommodation for each person’s individual tastes, preferences, style, and budget.
To help you figure out which is right for you, my guide to the best area to stay in St Croix will give you a range of options. From beachfront resorts to heritage hotels and eco-retreats, there are plenty to choose from.
Whatever type of accommodation you’re after, there are a lot of great places to base yourself on the island. From historic towns like Christiansted and Frederiksted to Cane Bay and Shoys, St Croix has a spot for everyone.
Whether you want to visit the main attractions, live like a local, immerse yourself in the island’s culture, or get out on the Caribbean Sea, there’s an area to stay in St Croix for you.
No matter if you have one night or a number of weeks, you’ll find a place that fits what you’re looking for.
1. Christiansted
I’ll start my list of where to stay in St Croix with Christiansted. One of the island’s two main towns, this place is full of colorful historic buildings, great restaurants and bars, hotels, and fun shops and boutiques.
It’s also a jumping-off point for activities like snorkeling trips to Buck Island and sea plane rides to St Thomas. Events like Jump Up, a street festival that happens four times a year, take place here as well.
Christiansted is a great place to stay not only because it’s a hub, but also because it’s beautiful. Right on the water, it’s home to an 18th-century Danish fort, a historic church, and lots of eye-catching shops and buildings.
As if that’s not enough, Christiansted has some of the best hotels in St Croix. From the King Christian Hotel on the waterfront to the Company House Hotel with its classic elegance, this town has no shortage of places to base yourself.
My top pick for a place to stay in Christiansted is the King Christian Hotel. This boutique luxury hotel is set in a pretty heritage building.
It features stylish guest rooms, a swimming pool, and some of the best restaurants, cafes, and bars on the island (the coffee shop and ice cream shop are some of my favorites, too). If this sounds good to you, you can book a room here.
2. Shoys
Just east of the heart of Christiansted, Shoys is another of the best areas to stay in St Croix. Quiet and laid-back, it’s a great spot to get away from it all.
Right on the seaside on the north side of St Croix, Shoys is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to be close to the town but not in it.
It’s also popular for people who like beaches, as there are beautiful stretches of sand here. From hotel beaches to Shoys Beach, there’s no shortage of places to sunbathe and swim here.
If you want to stay on this part of the island, The Buccaneer is just the ticket. This pink hilltop hotel has everything from beaches to swimming pools, shops, a golf course, and a waterfront restaurant.
I’ve spent long afternoons here soaking up the sun, walking along the sand, and enjoying lunch by the Caribbean sea, and I’ve always had great experiences. If this place appeals, you can book a room here.
3. Cane Bay
Next on my list of the best areas to stay in St Croix is Cane Bay. Located on the north shore, it’s often considered one of the most beautiful parts of the island.
Cane Bay is famous for its beach, and it’s also popular for snorkeling and scuba diving. Beloved by locals and visitors alike, the area is home to seaside restaurants, bars, and other entertainment.
This is a great place to base yourself if you like getting away from the bustle of the towns and staying somewhere a bit more relaxed and remote.
My top pick for a place to stay in this area is The Waves Cane Bay. This intimate waterfront boutique hotel has chic guest suites (some with full kitchenettes) featuring private patios overlooking the sea.
Built on a natural grotto right on the water, it’s a unique place to stay. You can book a room here.
The hotel is also home to one of the top places to eat on the island, AMA Cane Bay. It’s a sustainable seafood restaurant with unparalleled views across to St Thomas.
I’ve had drinks and dinner here on multiple occasions. Not only are the cocktails and food great, but also the seafront location. Sitting by the water at sunset as the waves crash onto the rocks is magical.
4. Frederiksted
Frederiksted is another of the best areas to stay on St Croix. Established in 1751, it’s the second largest town on the island. The center features colorful heritage buildings, a waterfront park, and a number of shops and restaurants.
On the west end of the island, Frederiksted is where cruise ships come into St Croix. It’s a popular place for day trippers.
Quieter than Christiansted, it also has more of a beach feel than a city atmosphere. It’s a good place for snorkeling, scuba diving, and other water activities. Rainbow Beach is considered one of the best on the island.
My top pick for a place to stay in Frederiksted is The Fred. This hip adults-only hotel is right on the beach near the heart of the town.
Its colorful vibe, poolside bar, spa, and swoon-worthy gift shop make it worth a visit, and its historic guest rooms make it worth a stay. I’ve been to The Fred and I loved the design and decor. You can book a room here.
5. Butler Bay
Just north of Frederiksted, Butler Bay is a beautiful stretch of coastline with a nature preserve and rugged scenery. It’s a great place to get off the beaten path and slip into island life.
Butler Bay and the areas around it feature everything from the dramatic spray of a geological blowhole to rock formations like Monk’s Bath and secluded beaches. It has a more remote feel than other places on the island.
My top pick for a place to stay in Butler Bay is the Feather Leaf Inn. This Caribbean eco-retreat is set on a historic estate that’s part of a 260-year-old plantation.
The main building features historic Danish architecture and the interiors have beautiful solar-powered guest rooms with views overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
The Feather Leaf Inn is adjacent to a secluded bay that’s ripe for snorkeling and swimming. If you want more activity, the hotel offers yoga retreats and other lifestyle and wellness events throughout the year.
